Hunterstoun Quarry
The easy way to Swallowtail Falls.
Where it is
About 2 km from the Hogsback Inn on Wolfridge Road there’s a quarry at the side of
the road. Opposite it: a gate signed “Hunterstoun”. Park at the quarry, go
through the gate and follow the path. (Start point: -32.59714, 26.93874.)
What it accesses
The easiest waterfall-for-effort trade in Hogsback: a gentle streamside walk through
a private estate to Swallowtail Falls, with red piggy signs showing the way and
Hog 1 standing guard across the valley. Add the cliff path and the ground drops away
into big air and bigger views. This is the civilised waterfall walk โ the one for
visitors who want the postcard without the punishment.
Pick your walk
| Time you have | Walk | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| 1.25 hrs | Swallowtail Falls loop (3.25 km) โ gentle, RED piggy signs | ๐ต Blue |
| ~2 hrs+ | Add the Hunterstoun Cliff Path extension โ big views, big drops | ๐ต Blue |
| Varies | Upper Swallowtail Falls โ the falls’ upper reaches | ๐ต Blue |
| Longer | Path extends down to join the Big Tree walk (serious extension โ see the Wolfridge Road gate) | ๐ด Red |
Safety at this gate
This is a private estate โ keep to the paths and close gates behind you. The
cliff-edge section demands full control of children and pets at all times. The
ground can be boggy after rain.
