Big Tree → Madonna & Child Falls
Grade: 🔴 Red (Big Tree only: 🟡 Yellow, suits families) · Distance: a point-to-point forest walk, not a loop — the figures below are signed from two different trailheads
Terrain: gradual descent into forest (~340 m down — and back up), fairly level to the falls
Starts at: Tyume Indigenous Forest Trail sign, Main Road (see Wolfridge Road gate)
Wet weather: caution — boardwalks slippery. Local guides (Oct 2026) report the Madonna & Child path is very slippery after rain, with a damaged walkway and exposed rock sections
The walk
The classic Hogsback day hike, and the fullest forest experience the village offers.
It begins at the Tyume Indigenous Forest Trail sign on Main Road and descends about
280 m into indigenous Tyume forest to the Big Tree — an 800-year-old Yellowwood
known as the Eastern Cape Monarch. Old sawpits from the 1890s hide beside the path,
and the forest rings with Knysna Turacos and, if you’re lucky, the elusive Narina
Trogon.
From the Big Tree the trail threads on past Swallowtail Falls and (optionally, for
agile scramblers) Bridal Veil Falls, over Gill’s Bridge and along timber walkways —
there’s even a bathing pool — to Madonna & Child Falls, the village’s most
popular waterfall. An outcrop of rock on the face of the falls forms the “Mother and
Child” shape that gives it its name.
At Madonna & Child, follow the sign up to Wolfridge Road: turn left for the ~5 km
road walk back to the village, or — the time-honoured local advice, unchanged for
sixty years — arrange a pickup at the M&C parking.
Distances (signed figures from each start)
There is no single verified length for the whole route, so we publish the official forestry signs from each end. They describe different walks and are not meant to add up to one total — please don’t read the 4.1 km and 2.7 km figures as the same stretch.
From the Big Tree trailhead (Main Road / Wolfridge gate), per the forestry sign board in a local guide’s photo Big Tree hike (51).jpeg: Viewpoint 0.4 km · Big Tree 1.7 km · Swallowtail Falls 2.5 km · Bridal Veil 4.0 km · Madonna & Child 4.1 km.
From the Madonna & Child parking (Wolfridge Road), per the sign board in a local guide’s photo W-05-Madonna: Madonna & Child Falls 450 m · Big Tree 2.7 km · Main Road exit to the village 5 km.
Checked on the ground: a local guide’s GPS walk of the Big Tree there-and-back (16 Oct 2026) came out at about 3.07 km, and a short descent GPX from the Madonna & Child parking records roughly 424 m down and 477 m up. Treat all sign-posted distances as approximate.
What you’ll see
- The 800-year-old Big Tree — the Eastern Cape Monarch

- 1890s sawpits, Gill’s Bridge, timber walkways and a bathing pool
- Birdlife: Narina Trogon, Orange Thrush, Bush Blackcap
Practical tips
- Follow the yellow painted footprints — the path is hard to pick out. Then:
RED piggy + WHITE CROSS = on to Madonna & Child; RED piggy + BLACK EQUALS = Lower
Swallowtail detour; RED piggy + BLACK DOT = Bridal Veil. - Bridal Veil is a rock scramble for agile hikers only. The going is steep and
treacherous beyond Swallowtail. - Don’t underestimate the climb back out (~280 m). What goes down must come up.
- Boardwalks are slippery when wet. Reported condition (local guide field notes, Aug and Oct 2026): the Madonna & Child route via Wolfridge is graded Rough — very slippery after rain, walkway damaged in places, with exposed rock sections.
- Just want the famous falls without the day hike? Use the
short route from the Wolfridge Road parking.
