The Amatola Trail: 100 km that ends at Hogsback
Last checked: 23 October 2026 — costs and booking facts verified against the operator’s site.
The Amatola Trail is South Africa’s classic self-guided thru-hike: about 100 km over six days through the Amathole mountains, starting at Maden Dam 22 km from King William’s Town and finishing roughly 3 km outside Hogsback — which makes our village the natural place to sleep before and celebrate after. The full package costs R3,125 per person (valid until 31 March 2027), booked through the servicing operator amatolatrails.co.za. It is a tough trail, and this page tells you honestly what you’re signing up for.
What is the Amatola Trail?
A point-to-point hutted hike across the Amathole range: six hiking days, five nights, five basic wooden huts, no electricity, and some of the most remote forest and grassland walking in the Eastern Cape. You carry your own kit; the huts carry bunks, mattresses and donkey-boiler showers. It runs west to east, ending on Hogsback’s side of the mountains.
The route, day by day
The classic six stages, per the operator (amatolatrails.co.za):
| Day | Stage | Distance | Ascent |
|—|—|—|—|
| 1 | Maden Dam → Gwili Gwili Hut | 11.9 km | 763 m |
| 2 | Gwili Gwili Hut → Dontsa Hut | 19.1 km | 633 m |
| 3 | Dontsa Hut → Cata Hut | 20.6 km | 1,024 m |
| 4 | Cata Hut → Mnyameni Hut | 14.6 km | 634 m |
| 5 | Mnyameni Hut → Zingcuka Hut | 19.4 km | 991 m |
| 6 | Zingcuka Hut → Tyume River (finish) | 16.2 km | 955 m |
That’s roughly 100 km and about 5,000 m of climbing across six days. Each hut sleeps up to 24, is Trellidor-secured, and has bunk beds, mattresses and donkey-boiler showers — hot water, wood-fire heated, no electricity. Pack a headlamp.

How fit do you need to be?
Tough. The operator’s own material says it plainly, and so do we: days two, three and five are 19–21 km with 600–1,000 m of climbing each, often in mist, on ground that stays wet. This is not a beginner trail — you need consecutive multi-day hiking behind you, boots that are already broken in, and a realistic view of your group’s slowest member, because the group moves at that pace.
The last 3 km: finishing at Hogsback
Day six ends at the Tyume River, about 3 km outside the village — and here’s the part the generic listings can’t tell you. The operator offers an Amatola+ finish: instead of stopping at the river, walk the extra route through the Tyume indigenous forest past the Madonna and Child Waterfall and the Big Tree, ending at Away with the Fairies in the village. You finish a 100 km hike walking Hogsback’s own forest paths.
Practical village logistics: most hikers sleep in Hogsback the night before the shuttle (briefing is at 6pm at Away with the Fairies, shuttle leaves 8am after breakfast), and the night after the finish — which is a shower, a restaurant meal and a bed that doesn’t creak. Book both nights when you book the trail: see where to stay, including Away with the Fairies itself, and pick your celebration venue from the restaurants page. Getting your group and gear up the mountain is covered on getting here.
While you’re in the village for the warm-up day, the two gentliest walks are the Big Tree and Madonna & Child circuit and the Village Circular Walk — real Amathole forest without the 20 km.
Not ready for 100 km? The Zingcuka Loop
The operator runs a two-day Zingcuka Loop for hikers who want the Amatola experience without a six-day commitment — the same huts-and-forest country in a weekend-sized package. Book it the same way, through amatolatrails.co.za.
Mountain weather decides everything
Mist, thunderstorms and cold fronts are real variables on a 100 km traverse — read Hogsback weather and check the snow page if you’re hiking in winter before you lock your dates.
