Backpackers & Camping in Hogsback

Hogsback’s budget end is genuinely varied — a village-edge hostel with a cliff bath, an off-grid eco-hostel that earns its water, a working farm campsite, and teepees for people who want the stars without the ground. This page lines them up honestly, including the distances, because “backpackers in Hogsback” can mean a five-minute walk to the pub or a 25-kilometre drive to the trailhead.

In the village

  • Away with the Fairies — the established backpackers: dorms, doubles, cottages and camping, roughly 80 beds, on the Lower Hogsback cliff edge. Famous outdoor bath, on-site kitchen and eatery. Pets by arrangement.
  • Hogsback Inn backpacker rooms — budget rooms have historically been part of the hotel’s room mix — phone the Inn to confirm what’s available before counting on one. See the Inn. (listing in review)

Camping

Every campsite in one place, with the cold-night planning notes: see the full camping guide.

  • Maylodge — cottages plus a camping ground on the Lower Hogsback (the sheet also lists a separate “Misty Site” camping area under the same operation) — phone 083 301 9030. Pets allowed.
  • Wild Fox Hill — camping plus two six-sleeper cottages, Upper Hogsback — phone 084 960 0898. Pets: no.
  • Terra Khaya — camping (about 20 tent sites) plus dorms and doubles, Upper Hogsback — phone 076 437 1898. Off-grid: expect long-drops and solar showers as features, not flaws. Pets allowed.

Glamping

  • The Magical Teepee Experience — four furnished teepees, eight beds, Mid/Bluff Hogsback — phone 072 431 6956. Pets allowed. Worth confirming winter availability when you book.

Off the mountain (worth knowing)

  • Elundini Backpackers — a proper backpackers about 25 km outside Hogsback (roughly half an hour’s drive), run as an eco experience in a rural settlement. Website: elundinibackpackers.com · phone 078 357 3285. It’s listed on the village’s own accommodation sheet — just don’t book it expecting to walk to the Green Dragon for dinner.
