Starways Pottery

Up on the mountain road, the Starways Art Centre runs hands-on pottery workshops in small groups: wheel throwing and drape moulding, taught by Gwyneth Lloyd and Liyanda Mafika at a centre that has shaped Hogsback’s artistic streak for decades. Five participants per workshop — small by design, which means booking is essential rather than polite.

The workshop

You get the wheel and the guidance, not a demonstration from the doorway. Sessions run on Saturdays — check and book through the Starways site or phone 082 928 5770 before you plan a morning around it. The centre sits on the Starways property with the pottery, kilns and an art gallery on site, so you can see where the mountain’s clay tradition actually lives.
