Hobbiton

The back door up to Kettlespout Falls.

Where it is

Start at the Hobbiton trapeze tower on Wolfridge Road โ€” Hobbiton is the cluster
of blue roofs. Ideal if you’re staying at or visiting Hobbiton itself.

What it accesses

From the trapeze tower the path climbs through forest โ€” the honestly-named Slippery
Path โ€” with viewpoints opening over the valley as you gain height, past the Holy
Cypress trees with their cross-tipped branches, up to the lip of Kettlespout Falls
at 1,340 m. On the right day the wind fires the water five metres straight up before
it falls. Earn it: 170 m of climbing, and a proper sense of achievement at the top.

Safety at this gate

The Slippery Path is genuinely slippery โ€” good boots and a walking stick are
essential. Not suitable for children. Avoid entirely in or after wet weather.
