The Edge Mountain Retreat
If Hogsback has a postcard stay, this is it. The Edge Mountain Retreat sits out on Perry Bar Lane where the plateau simply stops — rooms and self-catering cottages perched along the escarpment rim, with the Tyume Valley falling away hundreds of metres below. It’s the standing local answer to “most romantic stay in the village”, and it suits couples, contemplative walkers and anyone who’d rather watch weather roll up a valley than watch television.
It’s technically a retreat rather than a hotel, but it offers the full hosted experience — there’s a restaurant on the property, and the famous labyrinth on the lawn. (Comparing it against the village’s other hotel-class stays? See Hogsback’s four hotels compared.)
Location and setting
The Edge sits at the end of Perry Bar Lane, out along the Bluff — the big grass shoulder of the plateau west of the village centre, shared with the Eco-Shrine and the Mirrors Gallery. The setting is the point: cliff-top grassland, watsonias and proteas in spring, orchids in summer, and Gaika’s Kop brooding across the valley all year.
It’s a drive-or-walk from the village middle: you can also reach the Bluff on foot from the Village Green along Redcoat Lane (about 3.5 km one way).
Walks from your doorstep
Nowhere else in Hogsback puts this much walking at the door:
- The Labyrinth — right on the property: an eleven-circuit design modelled on Chartres Cathedral, one of the largest in the world at 29 m across and 91 m around, completed in 2002. The pathway winds 700 m to the centre and 700 m back — 1.4 km in total, flat, about 45 minutes, suitable for all ages.
- The Bluff Experience — a 3 km, roughly one-hour circular stroll from The Edge car park, taking in the Edge viewpoint, the Eco-Shrine and the Mirrors Gallery. Mostly level with one gentle descent.
- Feeling stronger? Walk in or out via the Village Green route instead of driving.
One serious note that applies to every guest: do not go near the cliff edge at the viewpoint, and keep children and pets under control at all times.
What staying there is like
Travel writers routinely name The Edge first when recommending Hogsback, and the cliff cottages are the stay people talk about afterwards. The property mixes guest rooms and self-catering cottages, with the restaurant on site for the nights you don’t want to cook.
The property’s own site confirms a mix of self-catering cottages — some right on the cliff edge — and en-suite B&B garden rooms. Public listings describe one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts sleeping 2, 4 or 6 guests; a 2023 account counted ten garden rooms, which we treat as unconfirmed until the property verifies it.
The on-site restaurant serves breakfast, light lunches and dinner, with a bar; bookings via 071 467 9291, and dinner guests are advised to book before 17:00. Published opening hours aren’t dependable — confirm directly, and ask about non-resident dining when you call.
This is no fly-by-night operation: The Edge already appears in the early-2000s Amatola Mountain Escape tourism brochure, and the village’s archived accommodation listings confirm it among the properties still operating today.
