Hogsback Waterfalls: The Complete Local Guide
Hogsback is waterfall country. The village sits on the rim of the Amathole escarpment, streams pour off the plateau in every direction, and generations of walkers have worn good paths to the best of them. This guide covers the falls that are genuinely worth your boots — with real distances, real times and the safety notes the postcards leave out.
A note on conditions: every figure here assumes dry weather. After rain the boardwalks and descents get seriously slippery, and after a big storm some paths close. Check road conditions and the weather before committing to the longer walks.
Madonna & Child Falls — the famous one
Hogsback’s most popular waterfall, named for the rock outcrop on the face of the falls that forms a mother-and-child shape cradled in the spray.
- Quick visit: park at the signposted Madonna & Child parking on Wolfridge Road (about 5 km from the village) and take the steep descent to the falls — about an hour there and back. 🟡 Moderate: it’s the climb back up that earns the view.

Kettlespout Falls — the one that flows upwards
Kettlespout is Hogsback’s party trick: with good water flow and a strong wind in the right direction, the water blows up to five metres upwards off the lip before falling as a curtain of mist. On the right winter’s day it’s the best free show in the Eastern Cape.
- Top of the falls: from the Stone Seat parking area on Forest Drive, climb the forestry service road — 3.7 km return, about 1.5 hours. 🟡 Moderate.
- Viewpoint from below: the Lower Kettlespout viewpoint path off Forest Drive is shorter (1.75 km) but steep to the platform. 🔵
- Safety, seriously: there is a sudden, huge drop at the top of the falls. No children or pets near the edge, ever. Boots and a walking stick; the descent is slippery when wet.
Swallowtail Falls — the gentle beauty
An interesting waterfall on the Hunterstoun estate, reached by an easy walk beside the stream, with a dramatic cliff-path section on the loop back. 3.25 km, about 1.25 hours. 🔵
Park at the quarry about 2 km from the village on Wolfridge Road and go through the gate marked “Hunterstoun”. It’s a private estate that generously keeps its paths open: stay on the paths, close gates behind you, and keep children and dogs under control on the cliff section. Boggy underfoot after rain.
Bridal Veil Falls — the scramble
A side-quest off the Big Tree circuit for agile hikers only: there’s no distinct path and the approach is a rock scramble. If that sentence made you smile, you’ll love it. If it made you nervous, admire Swallowtail instead.
The 39 Steps — the fifteen-minute waterfall
Through the stone pillars at the Oak Avenue entrance, an easy fifteen-minute walk through the Arboretum — past century-old Californian Redwoods — brings you to the little 39 Steps waterfall. Flat, pram-friendly, all ages. 🟢 The gentlest introduction Hogsback offers, and the answer to “we have one hour and a toddler”.
The Big Tree waterfall circuit — the classic day out
The full Hogsback experience in one walk: down past the Big Tree (an 800-year-old Yellowwood, the Eastern Cape Monarch) into the Tyume indigenous forest, past Swallowtail Falls, optionally scrambling to Bridal Veil, and on to Madonna & Child Falls — timber walkways, Gill’s Bridge and a bathing pool along the way.
- Big Tree return: 3.4 km, about 2 hours. With the Lower Swallowtail Falls detour: 4 km, allow 3 hours. 🟡
- Full circuit to Madonna & Child: 8 km, about 5 hours. 🔴 Fit walkers only.
- The catch: the route descends about 280 m into the forest — which means 280 m of climbing on the way home. Follow the yellow painted footprints; the path is hard to pick out in places. Many walkers arrange a pickup at the Madonna & Child parking on Wolfridge Road instead of walking the road back.

Grades follow Hogsback’s traditional “piggy” trail colours — the painted pig waymarks the village has used since the 1960s.
Waterfall safety, the local version
- Cliff edges here are unfenced and sudden. Keep children and dogs at hand near any falls.
- Wet rock and wet boardwalks are the main cause of bad days. After rain, downgrade your plan one level.
- Mist can arrive mid-walk in any season. If it does, cliff-edge viewpoints are off the menu.
- Tell someone where you’re walking, and don’t count on cellphone signal in the forest.
